Jeffrey Pepper Rodgers – Till I’m Alone with You (Syracuse)

I tried recording at first out on my deck, right around sunset, because that’s where I started writing the song. But after my dog barked near the end of a good take and I started getting bitten by mosquitoes, I moved inside. I played the keeper take in my living room, with the Zoom recorder on a little tripod perched on top of my cajon. I found I needed to raise the Zoom fairly high to get the right balance of voice and guitar. After doing a lot of home recording lately for a new album, I knew at least to take off my dog’s collar so it wouldn’t jingle at an inopportune moment. The performance I posted has some glitches but seemed to capture the feeling of the song best.

Mare Wakefield – House For An Irish Girl (Nashville)

I recoded the song while sitting in the living room floor, next to the air conditioning vent, in the corner between the fireplace and the bookshelf. I sat on two old hand-me-down pillows that another songwriter friend had given me before she moved to Dallas. It was about 7:30pm, and we were leaving the next morning for a 10-week tour so I knew I had to get a good take that night. It was hot and muggy outside (Nashville in August!), and that corner on the floor was the coolest place in the house. Final recording was take #3.

Oleg Sakharov – Waiting For The Rain (Moscow)

I recorded it at home. It was a hot day and I had to turn off the air conditioning because it was too noisy for the recording purposes. So I was dripping with sweat - almost like performing in a small hot club.

I recorded this song on a hot summer afternoon, as soon as I got back home with the guitar. I was excited about the project and the light was great.

Juri Member – Canyon (Berlin)

On a sunny afternoon I went to my studio/practice room. I did a couple of takes in the room and listened back to them. It was sounding pretty good, but very dry. Then I decided I wanted to get some reverb to create more sort of a ‘canyon feel’ to it, so I gave it a shot in the hallway in front of the studio and this is the result. If you listen closely you can actually hear a crow from outside twice while the final chord decays. Even more canyon feel. I liked that, so i chose this take which was the third.

[I wrote my song] in my basement in a room I call Harvey Wallbanger’s Hangout. This room has some nice notched pine panelling which gives it a warm sound.

“Nima Marie & Joel Cathcart – Vulnerable (Genoa)

We recorded Vulnerable on Saturday morning, in Joel’s kitchen. I took off my shoes and sat on the floor, while Joel played on the couch. Miguel, Joel’s flatmate, sat on a chair in front of us, listening and making us laugh between takes. We chose take #2 (though Miguel preferred #7).

[I recorded this song at] my kitchen table of a house that I live lived in for two years in East Vancouver. I love this house. As it happens, today is - sadly - my last day living here.

Scott MacKay – 66′ Corvette (Calgary)

I recorded my song around 4:00pm, on a squeaky blue chair in my music room with the sweet sounds of the Calgary Folk Festival pouring in through my window. It was my first take of the day.
